I love National Geographic Magazine as much as the next candidate for second-in-line-to-the-leader-of-the-free-world. However, I wouldn't presume to know how not to negotiate without preconditions with the leader of Iran after reading a fascinating article about Roman swords discovered in a Slovenian river bed. According to Mrs. Palin, there are a select few people who are able to enjoy travel to foreign countries, to explore other cultures, to learn that a Norwegian is not just a Nebraskan who speaks a strange language and wears a funny costume for national festivals. These lucky few world travelers are apparently trust fund kiddos whose parents hand them a passport, a backpack, and a wad of cash for them to blow on prostitutes in Prague, hash in Amsterdam, jugs of wine in Rome, and four-star hotels in Paris while she continues slaving away at the Dairy Queen and Motel 6, hoping to save enough money to buy the "C" volume of the World Book Encyclopedia and thus continue her education of foreign affairs. (I believe Cambodia was next on her list.) One would think, through all of her hard work, she would be able to afford to save up enough for a weekend jaunt over to Russia (which, to hear her tell it, is a matter of a few steps across a few well placed stones in the Bering Sea) to trade some moose meat for some nesting dolls.

In addition to my meal already posted, I had some fruit after I got to work.

Then I noticed this on the opinion page of the OU Daily, written by a senior [sic] at the University of Oklahoma. At first, I thought I had mistakenly clicked on a link for The Onion. Given the many opportunities for studying abroad through OU, I'm used to reading this sort of column in the school's newspaper. They usually describe the author's great awakening upon learning that university students at the University of Paris don't always share his love of chicken-fried steak and gravy, or his amazement that 15 year old boys in Germany are allowed to drink a beer on occasion. I'm looking forward to a follow up column by our correspondent in Scotland who, after spending a full three months there, will return with the thickest Scots dialect, reciting Burns, lamenting that what his fellow Sooners refer to as "football" bears no resemblance to the true sport as it's played across the Pond, but comforting us all with the realization that Aberdeen is really just like the south side of Ponca City, but with a funny accent.

just got a call from my girlfriend, which I couldn't ignore, even while watching the bio video of our potential future first lady girl. I put the TV on mute, but am sure I missed much. There were many still photos a la Diana Spencer, especially with that community organizer Mother Theresa. Why did she debase herself so much as to work with a community organizer??? In any case, I'm hoping someone can fill me in, as I missed the part about the adultery and what a grand American value adultery and teen pregnancy is. I ate these as I rolled my eyes to the ceiling, contemplated my own membership in the academic and nutritional elite, and lamented the fact that I will never have the opportunity that John McCain and Sarah Palin have, nor the legacy left behind by George W. I took college, I completed assignments, I did what I thought would prepare me as a productive member of society. I didn't realize that the country, my own country, would prefer to be led by a man who prided himself on being a 'C' student, who got access to one of the most prestigious universities in the world thanks and grace to his father's connections, and who spent that time of opportunity leading cheers, drinking, and snorting cocaine. Now we have a candidate who prides himself on graduating 894th out of a class of 899; a man who would have been thrown out of university for his behaviour were it not for the fact that he happened to be the son and grandson of naval admirals. I don't know what the vice presidential candidate's academic transcript holds, but I would hope that my country's voters find some intuitive correlation between a liberal education and successful leadership. As for me, I can only continue eating arugula, exercising, and educating myself on domestic and international events.
